How do I find the NFC chip location?

The NFC (near-field communication) chip is like the antenna that enables Tap to Pay between devices. It's located on the back and toward the center of most Android devices. For best results when taking a Tap to Pay payment, hold your phone toward the customer with the screen facing you. Then, have the customer hold their card or phone toward the center of the back of your phone. When the transaction is successful, you'll hear a beep and see the message Processing on the screen.

If Tap to Pay isn't responding, the NFC chip on your device may be located in a different area. Have the customer try holding their device towards the bottom center and top center areas of the back of your phone. If it's still not working, flip your phone around and have the customer hold their device to the front (screen) of your phone. These are less common, but the chip may be located there on some devices.

Additional suggestions:

  • For card payments, have your customer try tapping both sides (front and back) of their card; one side may work better than the other.
  • If you run into frequent issues connecting with Tap to Pay, try removing your phone case when processing transactions. Sometimes the phone case can interfere with the signal.

If it's your first time using Tap to Pay on your Android device, it's a good idea to try it out with a test transaction. That gives you the chance to locate the NFC chip on your device without the pressure of a waiting customer.

Why are the card numbers different when I use Tap to Pay on Android?

The number on the Tap to Pay payment might be different from your customer’s physical payment card number. This is normal. Contactless payments (through Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay) generate a tokenized number to serve as an ID for the payment. This generated payment token is used for the NFC payment, instead of the physical credit card number.

I see an error message when I use Tap to Pay on Android. How can I fix this?

If you see an error message that says, "Reader Failed to Connect, please check your network connection" or "Developer Options Not Supported," your Android device may have Developer options or Developer mode enabled. You’ll need to disable this setting to use Tap to Pay on Android. Here's how:

  1. On your Android device, tap Settings.
  2. Tap System, and then tap Developer options or Developer mode. (This will only appear if you have it enabled on your device.)
  3. Turn off the toggle for Developer options or Developer mode.
  4. Return to the GoDaddy mobile app, swipe up on your screen and close the app. (This manually forces the app to quit.)
  5. Restart your Android device, open the GoDaddy mobile app and retry the order.
