What is the difference between an email address and email forwarding?

An email address has its own unique mailbox where you can send, receive and access your email. You can access your mailbox online or with an email client, like Outlook. Add forwarding to your email address to send a copy of your emails to another email address.

When email forwarding is added to your email, it redirects emails sent to one email address to another. You can choose to leave a copy in both mailboxes, or just leave one copy in the forwarding address mailbox without leaving a copy in the original mailbox. This is helpful if you’re trying to maintain multiple mailboxes or hide the identity of a mailbox.

Different forwarding options and settings may be available depending on your email provider. For example, you might be able to forward messages to more than one address or leave a copy of emails in your regular email's mailbox. Check out your options for Microsoft 365 or Professional Email.

If you‘re a previous Workspace Email customer with an Email Forwarding product, it works a bit differently from a typical email forward. The Email Forwarding product allows you to use credits to create email addresses that will automatically deliver your email to another email address but won’t have a mailbox of its own. You can then view your email in the other account's mailbox.
