About .de Domains

denic.de is the sponsor and KeySystems is our backend provider for the country-code top-level domain name (ccTLD) .de extensions that represents Germany.

Who can register .de domains?

Anyone can register .de domain names.

NIS Verification is now required for all updates (including nameserver updates and new registrations). To complete the verification process for all contacts, please follow the steps below:

  • Log in to your account and navigate to your Domain Control Center.
  • Locate the above domain(s) and review the current contact details on file.
  • Verify that all contact information is accurate and up to date.
  • You must update the contact details to reflect your current and accurate information and click continue to avoid suspension.

Note: If the you fail to see the attestation option on your contacts, please re-enter your name and address and remove any abbreviations.

Registration restrictions

When registering a .de domain, you must follow specific requirements.

  • Must use: 1 - 63 Characters
  • Can use: Letters (a-z characters), numbers (0-9), hyphens (except in the 1st or last characters of the domain name)
  • Cannot use: Special Characters (e.g., & and #)
  • IDNs: Supported

Note: Customers purchasing new .de domains must complete Email Verification to activate the domain. This change is aimed at enhancing security and ensuring accurate registrant information. If email verification is not completed as required, the domain will be suspended and may be deleted by the registry.

  • Registration length: 1 year
  • Renewal length: 1 year
    • Your .de domain name renews before its expiration date. If auto-renew is turned on, we'll attempt renewal 20 days prior to the domain's expiration date. If the first attempt fails, we'll continue attempting renewal multiple times prior to the domain's expiration date.
    • If we cannot auto-renew the domain name and you do not manually renew it by 6 days prior to the expiration date, you can attempt to recover your domain with any applicable fees.
  • Backorders: Not supported
  • Transfers to GoDaddy: Supported
    • When a .de domain is transferred, any registration period longer than 1 year does not carry over to the new registrar.
  • Transfers away from GoDaddy: Supported
    • Transfer Lock: Not supported
    • You must initiate the transfer with the gaining registrar and provide an authorization code. Contact a GoDaddy Guide to request an authorization code.
  • Transfers to another GoDaddy account: Supported
    • When the domain name is moved, the registrant first name, last name, and organization cannot be changed.
  • Domain Privacy: Not supported
  • Domain Protection: Supported
  • Cash Parking: Supported
  • Contact Updates: Supported

    Nameserver requirements

    • Must use: 0-13 Authoritive nameservers. Each nameserver must be on a separate class-C network. That is, the first three octets cannot be the same. For example, 216.1.69.1 and 68.42.99.120 are valid.
    • Can use: IPV4 and IPV6
    • Cannot use: DNSSEC
